5 tricks to look leaner by tomorrow

You’re all set to banish that winter flab before the weather warms up, then you see next week’s forecast and realise it’s time to break out your summer wardrobe before you’re ready... Sound familiar?

Don’t panic yet. Follow our simple tips to start looking leaner in 24 hours – and, no, you won’t need to spend that time munching on endless lettuce leaves and sweating it out in a sauna.

1. Budge the bloat

Bloating can add centimetres to your belly size and is suffered by almost half of women on a weekly basis, recent research shows. However, the good news is a few dietary changes can deflate it in less than 24 hours, nutritionist Kathleen Alleaume says. Here’s how:

Drink lots of water: While fluid retention is the cause of a lot of bloating, having more than two litres of water a day can flush away retained fluid and ramp up the digestive system to get things moving.

Have a breakfast high in insoluble fibre: “A bowl of bran and sliced pears is a great start to the day,” Alleaume says. Remember, a high-fibre diet requires a high water intake to assist in digestion.

Steer clear of salt: Sodium can make the body retain fluid, so choose a fresh and wholefood diet over processed foods.

2. Invest in some shapewear

In the time it takes to squeeze into these undergarments, they promise to make you look kilos lighter. They’re particularly good under party attire or clingy clothes when you want to hide the muffin top and saddlebag thighs. However, health experts warn that shapewear is only a temporary fix and shouldn’t become a wardrobe staple or replaceexercise and a healthy diet. There have also been suggestions that the way they compress your organs isn’t good for your overall health.

Still, they’re handy in emergencies.

3. Fake a glow

Every beauty expert and stylist will tell you that a golden glow will help to elongate your legs, mask any dimpling on your limbs and make you look healthy. You can do it yourself with a self-tan product, or visit a professional spray tanner, who will know what colour will suit you and ensure it’s applied evenly.

4. Improve your posture

Standing tall with your abs and core engaged can give the impression of a slim body. And this is backed by research– a study by the University of Louisville in the US asked 60 people to rate the bodies of two women in a series of photos that showed them slumping and standing tall. The body of the larger woman was perceived to be thinner and more attractive simply because she was standing straighter. Adding a strong plank to your daily workout will teach your core muscles to engage.

5. Dress to look less

What you wear plays a significant role in how your body shape is portrayed to others. Personal stylist Jo Blankfield says the key to looking leaner is to “elongate your shape using vertical lines in your dressing”. She has these practical fashion tips to give you a slimmer silhouette:

Dress in light layering: For example, wear a shorter top under a light jacket or vest. Blankfield says denim vests are very “on trend” this summer and are great for making your torso look longer and leaner.

Accessorise with longer necklaces: A pendant necklace that finishes at the bra line draws the eyes to the small part of the waist and away from any larger areas you’re trying to hide.

Wear prints with vertical movement: While vertical stripes have long been a slimming fashion tip, Blankfield says that prints that move the eye up and down work even better. “They’re a great distraction,” she adds.

Choose flattering fabrics: Steer clear of clingy jersey and Lycra and go for soft draping linen-cotton blends. Neoprene, the material used in wetsuits, is a big trend this year, Blankfield says, and it’s great in skirts and tops as it holds its shape.

Dress to suit your body and enhance your assets: For example, if you’re a bit “hippy”, wear jackets that sit at the waist and balance out your lower torso. If you’re a classic “apple” then you want to draw attention to your legs and away from your top-heavy area by wearing mid-length skirts.
